B-1/B-2 Visa

The B non-immigrant visa is available to visitors who come to the United States for business (B-1) or pleasure (B-2). In determining whether to issue a B-1 / B-2 visa, consular officers must be satisfied that the visa applicant possesses a "bona fide non-immigrant intent." B visas are granted by U.S. Consulates for varying lengths of time, depending on the nationality of the applicant, and the individual's social, economic, and family ties to the home country. The Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) inspector at the U.S. port of entry determines the length of stay and notes this on an arrival card (Form I-94). Once in the United States, the B visitor is usually precluded from engaging in productive employment; that is, the visitor cannot receive pay from a U.S. employer.
