F Visa An F-1 visa, otherwise known as a "student visa," is a non-immigrant visa for persons entering the United States for the purpose of attending school. In order to be eligible for the F-1 visa, the applicant must, among other things: (1) have a foreign residence and no intention of abandoning it; (2) be a bona fide student entering the United States for the sole purpose of enrolling in a full course of study at a U.S. academic institution; and (3) establish that he or she will have sufficient financial support during the time of study. Spouses and children of F-1 visa holders may enter in F-2 status. Applicants under 18 must have parental or guardian consent, and applicants entering for the purpose of attending elementary or high school must apply for F-1 status through a private institution.
